Kenya’s Defense Chief Replaced as Military Response Criticized

Kenya replaced the head of its military, which has been criticized for not preventing attacks including one by Islamist militants that left 147 people dead this month.

The government’s Defence Council on Friday selected Lieutenant-General Samson Mwathethe as chief of Defence Forces to replace Julius Karangi, President Uhuru Kenyatta said in an e-mailed statement. Parliament must approve the nomination, Kenyatta said. Karangi’s career spanned 40 years.
