Abengoa SA inaugurated the first desalination plant in West Africa that will make seawater potable for a half-million people in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

The Seville, Spain-based energy and environment company said Friday the plant will provide 60,000 cubic meters a day of drinking water using saltwater-purifying technologies that will be sold to Ghana Water Co. under a 25-year build-own-operate-transfer model. At least 230 million people worldwide use desalinated water a day for supplies, it said.
