China Needs 50% Emissions Cut for ‘APEC Blue’ Sky, Official Says

China needs to cut emissions of major pollutants by half to achieve the clear skies seen in Beijing when the city hosted annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in November.

For “noticeable” improvements, China needs to reduce emissions by 30 percent to 50 percent from current levels, Zhai Qing, a vice minister for environmental protection, said at a briefing today in Beijing, citing data from researchers he didn’t identify. By comparison, statistics published by the ministry in January showed China achieved an average nationwide reduction of 3.25 percent last year.
