Yemen’s Houthi rebels and supporters of the embattled president called for rallies a day after their political standoff tipped the nation deeper into chaos.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the campus of Sana’a University to denounce what they called a coup by the mostly Shiite Houthis and vow loyalty to Abdurabuh Mansur Hadi, whose resignation on Thursday must be accepted by parliament. Similar demonstrations were held in Taiz and in the central province of Ibb. The Houthis called for supporters to rally later today and deployed armed men throughout Sana’a, the capital.
