Pope Francis urged Philippine leaders to shun corruption and focus on easing poverty and promoting social welfare.
“As many voices in your nation have pointed out, it is now, more than ever, necessary that political leaders be outstanding for honesty, integrity and the common good,” Francis said in his televised address at the presidential palace in Manila after a meeting with President Benigno Aquino. Francis also encouraged the Philippines, Asia’s most Catholic nation, to foster unity and cooperation in the region.
