Applications to Princeton, Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania rose, demonstrating that competition remains fierce for spots at top U.S. colleges.

Princeton received 26,993 applications for the class of 2019, 1 percent higher than last year and the second-largest pool in its history, the college said in a statement. The number of hopefuls jumped 6 percent at Dartmouth and 15 percent at New York University, which said it was the biggest increase in 15 years.
