China Calls for Local Targets to Curb Coal Use to Cut Pollution

China asked four regions including Shanghai and Guangdong to set targets for reducing coal use by the end of June as part of efforts to curb pollution.
Shanghai and the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang are among eight “key regions” where the nation is seeking to cut coal consumption and instead use alternative energies or natural gas, according to a statement posted on the website of the National Development and Reform Commission.
