Former Sri Lanka Leader Denies Early-Morning Coup Attempt

Updated on

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa denied allegations that he sought to stage an early-morning coup to retain power after assessing that he would lose a Jan. 8 election.

President Maithripala Sirisena’s camp said yesterday it plans to investigate an “attempted coup” by Rajapaksa that was foiled when security forces refused his orders. The allegation is “baseless and unsubstantiated,” Mohan Samaranayake, a spokesman for Rajapaksa, said by phone today.
