Activist investor Trian Fund Management LP made an opening bid to gain four board seats at DuPont Co., setting the stage for a potential breakup of the top U.S. chemical maker by value.

Trian nominated its co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Nelson Peltz as a DuPont director, the New York-based investment firm said yesterday in a statement. Also nominated are John H. Myers, a former CEO of GE Asset Management Inc.; Arthur B. Winkleblack, former chief financial officer at H.J. Heinz Co.; and Robert J. Zatta, acting CEO at chemicals maker Rockwood Holdings Inc.
