Almost a quarter of the 212 billion euros ($252 billion) the European Central Bank granted lenders to stoke the euro-area economy is in the hands of five banks.

The CHART OF THE DAY shows BNP Paribas SA, Intesa Sanpaolo SpA, UniCredit SpA, Banco Santander SA and CaixaBank SA borrowed a combined 51.6 billion euros in two steps from the ECB last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Intelligence. While those five and 32 other banks have disclosed 126 billion euros of borrowings, the recipients of the remaining 86 billion euros didn’t reveal their takeup, the data show.
