Edward Brooke, whose triumph in a 1966 election in Massachusetts made him the first black U.S. senator in American history elected by voters, has died. He was 95.

He died today, according to the Associated Press, citing Ralph Neas, a former aide. Brooke died of natural causes at his home in Coral Gables, Florida.
