The U.S. ambassador to Britain, Matthew Barzun, defended Facebook Inc. over its failure to pass on to security services information about one of the Islamic extremists who murdered a British soldier in London last year.

Barzun, speaking at a lunch for reporters at the U.K. Parliament today, also said Facebook and other U.S. technology giants such as Google Inc. are simply obeying the rules when they avoid tax. Such companies have been criticized by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and British lawmakers for the level of U.K. tax they pay.
