Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, said Thursday that her chamber “absolutely” should hold hearings to investigate the death of Eric Garner.

The comments from the Washington state lawmaker, who is the highest-ranking woman in House Republican leadership, come a day after a grand jury declined to indict the white New York City police officer who put Garner, a black man, in a chokehold. Garner had been stopped on suspicion of selling untaxed cigarettes and the July incident was captured on video. The grand jury's decision has provoked widespread outrage across the political spectrum.
