The Democratic National Committee on Monday dropped Phoenix and Birmingham from consideration for the party's 2016 national convention and named New York, Philadelphia and Columbus as finalists.
“We are fortunate to have such a diverse and vibrant group of cities interested in hosting this special event and we thank Phoenix and Birmingham for showcasing their special communities," said Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the DNC chair.
Republicans have already picked Cleveland in the swing state of Ohio as their 2016 convention city. Selecting Columbus would give Democrats a counterweight.
