Hunger Games Salute From Thai Students Greets Coup Leader

Updated on

Thai junta leader Prayuth Chan-Ocha was greeted by an outlawed protest on his first post-coup visit to the country’s northeast, the political stronghold of the government he toppled.

Prayuth, who as army chief seized power from the elected government in May and now serves as prime minister, had just begun speaking at an event in Khon Kaen yesterday when five university students stood with their arms raised and gave a three-fingered salute, a gesture inspired by “The Hunger Games” movies that has become a symbol of resistance in Thailand. The students wore t-shirts that spelled out the words in Thai for “No Coup.”
