Natural gas futures advanced for the first time in five days in New York as forecasts show frigid weather blanketing the eastern and central U.S., elevating demand for the heating fuel.

Temperatures may be below normal across most of the contiguous U.S. through Nov. 23, according to MDA Weather Services in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Minneapolis temperatures may drop to 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 Celsius) on Nov. 17, 21 less than average, AccuWeather Inc. said on its website. A government report today may show an above-average gain in U.S. inventories.
