Oil Industry Water Problems Signal Treatment Need: Report

The oil and gas industry will generate a half-billion barrels of water a day by 2020, most of which will need to be treated with new technologies, according to a report.
The industry’s spending on water management and services is forecast to grow 6 percent annually through 2020, reaching $38 billion this year, said the Veolia Environnement SA-sponsored study published today by the London Environmental Investment Forum. With 14 percent annual growth, North America is the industry’s fastest-growing region because of oil sands development in Canada and shale extraction in the U.S.
