An environmental advocacy group accused a Chinese government delegation of smuggling ivory out of Tanzania during President Xi Jinping’s visit in 2013.
Chinese buyers began purchasing ivory two weeks before the visit and the local price doubled to $700 per kilogram (2.2 pounds) during the trip, the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency said in a report published today, citing two ivory traders. China’s foreign ministry rejected the claim.
