Japan asked China to stop fishermen from poaching red coral from Japanese territorial waters, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters today.

Suga said Japan has expressed its regret to China over the incidents and asked vessels to leave an area around the Ogasawara islands, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Tokyo. Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said yesterday that many Chinese boats had been spotted in the area since mid-September, with 212 sighted on Oct. 30.
