Shiite Houthi fighters captured an al-Qaeda stronghold in central Yemen as the rebels expand their control across the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country, a tribal leader said today.
The Houthis advanced into al-Manasih in the province of al-Baidha after defeating local gunmen fighting along side al-Qaeda, Ahmed al-Sarimah, a tribal chief, said by phone. The armed Houthis moved into the village after using tanks and rockets to dislodge the tribal fighters, al-Sarimah said. Al-Masirah television, which is allied to the Houthis, reported that the al-Qaeda militants fled into nearby mountains.
