Mumias Sugar Co., Kenya’s biggest producer of the sweetener, closed its milling plant for eight weeks for maintenance and amid a shortage of cane for crushing, Marketing Director Margaret Makhungu said.

The factory was shuttered Oct. 19 and the work will cost 1.5 billion shillings ($17 million), which has been raised “internally,” Makhungu said today by phone from the capital, Nairobi. The company’s ethanol and water-bottling operations are unaffected by the shutdown, which had been postponed since May, she said.
