European soccer’s governing body opened an investigation into violence last night that caused the abandonment of a qualifying match between Serbia and Albania for the regional championship.

The players were pulled from the field by English referee Martin Atkinson after a remote-controlled aircraft carrying an Albanian flag buzzed the stadium in Belgrade. Serbian soccer’s governing body was charged by UEFA with failing to control its fans, who threw objects and invaded the pitch. Albania’s group was charged with displaying an illicit banner and refusing to play.
