Hong Kong’s top official Leung Chun-ying refused to quit and appointed his deputy Carrie Lam to hold talks with student leaders of pro-democracy protests that have crippled parts of the city for the past week.
The student federation that started the rally said in a statement it was awaiting details from the government and vowed to continue the sit-in until their demands are met. Other protest leaders welcomed the beginning of dialog and urged protesters to avoid provoking clashes with police who used tear gas and pepper spray last weekend.
