Poland’s new prime minister pledged to shield Poland’s coal industry and consumers from tougher European Union climate requirements after winning a confidence vote in Warsaw late yesterday.
Ewa Kopacz, 57, is replacing Poland’s longest serving prime minister since 1989, Donald Tusk, who resigned a year before elections to become president of the European Union. Backed by 259 of parliament’s 460 members, including 27 independent and opposition deputies, Kopacz said she’s been entrusted with “a strong mandate” to govern.
