AMC Networks Inc., the cable television programmer, is nearing a deal to acquire almost 50 percent of BBC America for about $200 million, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

An accord would value the U.S. channel at more than $400 million, said the people, who asked not to be named because the negotiations are private. BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of government-backed British Broadcasting Corp., would retain a controlling stake, they said.
