Wemag AG, a northern German utility, opened what it says is Europe’s first commercial battery plant to store power from erratic sources such as wind and solar.
The 5-megawatt unit, which was built by Younicos AG and runs on 25,600 Samsung SDI Co. lithium-manganoxid cells, was connected to the grid today, Wemag said in a statement on its website. It seeks to integrate a growing share of wind and solar power into the network, it said.
