The Nigerian military’s drive to destroy the Boko Haram Islamist group is failing and won’t work unless it also protects and wins the trust of local communities, according to a report by Chatham House.
“Any effort to destroy Boko Haram without complementary strategies for negotiations and sufficient provisions for alternatives to membership of the movement will fail,” Marc-Antoine Perouse de Montclos, an associate fellow at London-based Chatham House, said in the report released today. “The sect will simply adapt, move and continue.”
