Israel and Palestinian militants agreed to extend their truce, media on both sides of the conflict reported, providing more time for negotiations on a long-term accord to end violence that has devastated Gaza.

The Palestinian news agency Maan and Israel’s Channel 2 television reported the breakthrough hours before the existing cease-fire in the Gaza Strip was set to expire at midnight local time. Both cited officials they didn’t name, while the Israeli government declined to comment. The extension will be announced in Cairo at approximately 11 p.m., the Bethlehem-based Palestinian agency said.
