Libyan lawmakers elected a new parliament chief, ignoring Islamist objections in a vote that put the battle-torn nation on a path to further unrest.

Following a run-off ballot that ended early today, lawmakers in the new House of Representatives elected Ageela Salah Issa al-Ebeidi with 77 votes out of 158, according to Al-Nabaa television.
