Turnout at the European Union legislative elections in May hit a new low, according to final figures that crush the claims of pro-EU politicians that a three-decade downward trend had been halted.

Turnout for the May 22-25 balloting for the European Parliament averaged 42.5 percent, down from 43 percent at the previous elections in 2009. The final number is also lower than a 43.09 percent estimate that the 28-nation EU Parliament published on May 25 and didn’t update until late July, when it did so quietly on its website.
