Germany Talks Deficit Reduction Flexibility Before Summit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government signaled a willingness to be less rigid in interpreting European budget-deficit rules, following calls from France and Italy for more flexibility.

“It’s a question of application; it’s a question of assessing individual cases,” Steffen Seibert, Merkel’s chief spokesman, told reporters today. “We stand by that.”
