UN Envoy Says Eritrean Government Abuse Forces Thousands to Flee

Arbitrary arrests and indefinite service in Eritrea’s army are among factors forcing thousands of people to flee the Horn of Africa country each month, a United Nations rights envoy said.
Government abuses in Eritrea caused a “monthly exodus” of 2,000 people to neighboring Ethiopia, with an equal number fleeing to Sudan in May, the UN’s special rapporteur on the rights situation in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, told the UN Human Rights Council yesterday, according to a summary on its website.
