The candidates were there, the press were there, even the steel band was there. All that was missing from the U.K. Independence Party’s “Carnival of Colour” was the party leader, Nigel Farage.

UKIP, which seeks to lower immigration and pull Britain out of the European Union, arranged yesterday’s event in Croydon, south London, to rebut accusations of racism. Farage was to be photographed with black candidates for the May 22 European and local elections. A Jamaican steel band would play to show how comfortable the party is with different cultures.
