Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former professional basketball player, has been named president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Johnson, 48, the group’s vice president, will finish the term of Scott Smith, the Republican mayor of Mesa, Arizona, who stepped down to run for governor, according to a statement yesterday by the Washington-based organization. Johnson will then serve a full, one-year term until June 2015.
