The Philippine government signed a peace pact with the nation’s largest Muslim rebel group after a four-decade insurgency, a step toward creating a new autonomous region to help unlock investment in the mineral-rich south.
Government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front negotiators today inked a five-page document formalizing the comprehensive agreement on the Bangsamoro, a political entity that would replace a failed autonomous region set up in Mindanao province in 1989.
