U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Poland and Lithuania early next week for talks with key allies on the front lines of an increasingly tense standoff with Russia over Ukraine, according to the White House.

Biden trip begins March 17, a day after a Moscow-backed referendum in Crimea on seceding from Ukraine and joining the Russian federation. The U.S. and its allies in Europe have warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that his nation will face financial sanctions if Russia annexes Crimea.
