Markit U.S. Factory Index Rose to 54.3 in November From 51.8

The Markit Economics preliminary index of U.S. manufacturing rose in November to 54.3 from 51.8 last month, the London-based group said today.

A reading greater than 50 indicates expansion. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey called for a gain to 52.3. Estimates of the 17 economists ranged from 51 to 53.1.

Manufacturing in the 17-nation euro area expanded for a fifth month in November, another Markit report showed today. The group’s factory index rose to 51.5 from 51.3 in October.

A Chinese manufacturing gauge declined for the first time in four months. The preliminary 50.4 reading for the November Purchasing Managers’ Index released today by HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit compared with a 50.8 median estimate from analysts

The Markit purchasers figure for the U.S. is based on responses from 85 percent to 90 percent of companies in a poll of more than 600 American manufacturers.
