South Africa’s anti-corruption police unit said it will be shutting shafts at an abandoned mine west of Johannesburg to try stop illegal mining.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, is working to shut more than 10 shafts at the closed Durban Deep mine, 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of Johannesburg, where people have been unlawfully searching for gold, Paul Ramaloko, a spokesman for the unit, said by phone from the city.
