Kenya’s Amani Coalition Endorses Mudavadi’s Presidential Run

Kenya’s United Democratic Forum party chose Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi to run as its presidential candidate in a coalition with three other parties at elections scheduled for March 4.

Mudavadi accepted the nomination at a party conference broadcast live today on on Nairobi-based Citizen TV.

The Amani Coalition also includes the Kenya African National Union, New Ford Kenya and Vision Party of Kenya, Mudavadi said. Amani means peace in the local Swahili language.

KANU, as the Kenya African National Union is known, came to power after the East African nation’s independence from Britain in 1963 and ruled until 2002, when current president Mwai Kibaki’s party unseated it.

Other declared presidential contenders include fellow Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Alliance and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who leads the Coalition for Reform and Democracy.
