Argentines packed streets and squares across the country last night, banging pots and waving banners to protest President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner’s failure to combat inflation and crime, and oppose changes to the constitution that would allow her to seek a third term.

The protests, the second this year, were supported by about 2 million people and constituted the biggest rally since 1973, when former President Juan Domingo Peron returned from exile, according to Jorge Giacobbe, a political analyst at Jorge Giacobbe & Asociados polling company. About 700,000 people gathered in the city of Buenos Aires, newspaper Clarin reported, citing officials from the capital’s government.
