Miguel de la Madrid, Who Led Mexico Amid Crisis, Dies at 77

Miguel de la Madrid, the Harvard University-trained economist who was president of Mexico during a period of triple-digit inflation, has died. He was 77.

The former leader died today at 7:21 a.m. in a Mexico City hospital, Gabriela Roman, a secretary for the family, said in a telephone interview. He suffered from emphysema, she said, without specifying a cause of death. The office of Mexican President Felipe Calderon confirmed the death in a statement.
