China Tells Banks to Roll Over Local Government Debt, FT Reports

China has instructed banks to roll over loans to local governments as the principal on much of the debt can’t be repaid, the Financial Times reported, citing bankers and analysts.

Some loans will be extended by as much as four years, the newspaper said, citing one person it didn’t identify. Banks have started extending the durations to avoid a wave of defaults, the FT said.
