Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called for the introduction of joint euro bonds to stem the region’s sovereign debt crisis, Die Welt reported.

The European Central Bank should also step up purchases of bonds issued by troubled countries, Schroeder told an audience of German and Russian businessmen in Berlin yesterday, according to the newspaper.
