Platinum Market May See 135,000 Ounces Shortfall in 2012

Platinum demand may exceed supplies by 135,000 ounces next year as the market moves into a deficit, Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd.’s Zimbabwean unit said in a report to shareholders today.

Demand may rise to 8.27 million ounces in 2012 from 7.79 million ounces this year while supplies will probably rise to 8.14 million ounces, the company said. A 405,000 ounce palladium deficit may widen to 570,000 ounces next year, it added. Rhodium demand may increase 8.2 percent to 1.06 million ounces next year, it said.
