A Closer Look at Bank Profits

Net income at five of the six largest U.S. banks—the exception was Bank of America—beat analysts' estimates. Pretax preprovision profit, a measure that doesn't count one-time items, taxes, or money released from bad-loan reserves, slid an average of 40.2 percent at the six lenders.
