Defense Secretary Robert Gates is scheduled to leave for Russia today after delaying his departure yesterday so he could monitor the start of U.S. military action against Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi.

“Secretary Gates has been in near constant contact with the Joint Staff as planning for “Operation Odyssey Dawn” has evolved,” Defense Department spokesman Geoff Morrell said yesterday, referring to the office that connects and sets strategic direction for all U.S. military forces.
