Syria Boosts Phosphate Production, Seeks Fertilizer Investments

Syria’s production of phosphates grew by 46 percent last year, while annual exports of the fertilizer ingredient increased by 54 percent, the Oil Ministry said.

The Arab country produced 3.6 million metric tons of phosphate in 2010, up from 2.46 million tons the year before, the ministry said in an e-mailed statement today. Syria exported 3.06 million metric tons, or 85 percent, of last year’s production, generating revenue of 9.36 billion pounds ($200 million), it said. Exports in 2009 were 1.99 million tons.
