New York City schools would lose as many as 21,000 teachers in the event the state reduces education aid by $1 billion and city classrooms took the full brunt of the cut, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
“Scuttlebutt is that the education budget will be cut statewide and New York City’s share of that would be a $1 billion cut,” the mayor said in his weekly appearance on WOR radio. “A billion dollars is 15,000 teachers, and we already have in this budget a reduction of 6,000 teachers, some with attrition.”
