India’s Orissa state, the nation’s largest iron ore producer, plans to restrict sales of the raw material to other provinces, aiming to increase supplies for local steelmakers and curb illegal mining.

Companies including Aditya Birla Group’s Essel Mining Ltd. and Rungta Mines Ltd. may be allowed to sell no more than 30 percent of their output outside the state, Orissa Mines Minister Raghunath Mohanty said today by phone. Most of the ore in the state is mined by mills such as Tata Steel Ltd. and Steel Authority of India Ltd. and used in their own plants.
