More towns in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria have been told to evacuate to escape surging rivers that are threatening levees, becoming the latest communities hit by months of flooding.

Dimboola, some 350 kilometers (217 miles) northwest of Melbourne, and Kow Swamp, about 270 kilometers north of the Victoria state capital, were placed on evacuation alert and flood warnings were issued for five rivers. One quarter of the state has now been affected, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
